Forced to settle

Article Abstract:

Primary health care workers should review their policy concerning travellers or ex-travellers. Travellers face difficult conditions in their chosen lifestyle due to government policy which restricts their ability to park and obtain seasonal work. Many have been forced to accept permanent housing. This is a lifestyle which they would not have chosen and it puts them into an environment where they frequently feel marginalized. Primary health care workers should be aware of the greater health risks amongst these people, and their unequal access to health care, and prioritize services accordingly.

Lessons in self-support

Article Abstract:

Nurses can train some patients in the technique of clean intermittent self-catheterization (CISC). This technique becomes necessary when patients experience problems related to residual urine in the bladder. Patients may be able to perform CISC if they have the necessary cognitive ability and physical dexterity. Nurses can persuade patients of the advantages of this technique, as opposed to indwelling catheterization or the wearing of appliances. Nurses should give patients time to read informative literature, handle a catheter, and discuss CISC, before teaching the procedure.

Will 'expert patients' undercut nurses?
