Forklift safety: power up your training program

Article Abstract:

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is considering proposals to revise the OSHA standard 1910.178 for forklift operation that would bar untrained drivers from operating industrial power trucks. The new revisions would require employers to conduct a training program that would be compulsory for drivers before they are given permission to operate forklift trucks. The prevailing concerns about forklift safety stem from the 85 deaths and 34,900 serious injuries that industrial truck accidents cause annually.

Powered industrial trucks: they're not for everyone

Article Abstract:

Company purchases of powered industrial trucks need to be coupled with adequate safety training as these trucks can pose serious hazards to untrained employees. Safety considerations include reading the manual carefully, using the right truck for the load, ensuring careful maintenance and care and wearing the right protective gear. Potentially hazardous areas include inclines, docks and elevators.
