Forum two: unanswered research questions about metabolic control in non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus

Article Abstract:

Future research on diabetes should address six aspects of the disease including disease treatment, health care delivery, and prevention. A group of health care professionals in the diabetes field met to outline goals for future research. A main research goal should be to study how aggressive management of blood sugar levels in patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) affects their heart. Other goals include defining the roles of other risk factors in disease progression and determining ideal blood sugar targets for different patient populations and stages of disease. Studies should also address ways to improve cooperation of primary care doctors in optimizing care given to patients with NIDDM. Other aspects of diabetes needing further research are ways to better control obesity, reduce insulin resistance, and genetically identify patients at risk for diabetic complications.

Research suggests that tight glucose control in diabetic patients with acute myocardial infarction improved outcomes. The indications for intensive insulin treatment in different critical care sittings to include postoperative surgical intensive care unit (SICU) care are expanded with the help of the research.

Article Abstract:

Diabetics who control their blood sugar to prevent hypoglycemia can maintain the body's warning system that tells them when their blood sugar gets too low. Otherwise, they will experience continual periods of hypoglycemia and their body will no longer warn them.
