Four scientists honored with City of Medicine awards

Article Abstract:

The 1996 City of Medicine awards go to four scientists. Eng M. Tan is recognized for discovering and defining nuclear antigens and antibodies in autoimmune diseases such as lupus. Joan Steitz is honored for the discovery of cellular particles called snurps that serve in gene expression. Kenneth Olden earned an award for widening inquiry into environmental causal factors for disease. Alfred Knudson is recognized for identifying anti-oncogenes that prevent cell mutation.

Chronic conditions a huge burden on health spending

Article Abstract:

Nearly half of all Americans suffer from chronic conditions, according to research conducted at the Institute for Health and Aging at the University of California, San Francisco. Direct and indirect treatment for chronic conditions totals about $659 bil per year. The studies also found that persons with chronic conditions are more likely to be underinsured that those without chronic conditions.

Council forum marks 75 years of patient advocacy

Article Abstract:

The National Health Council's 1995 National Health Forum will focus on the ability of managed care to meet high-risk patients' needs. The forum, sponsored by the American Medical Assn, will examine how, in a managed-care environment, to best define and provide high-quality, patient-responsive care for high-risk patients. Forum speakers and panelists are listed.
