Fresh approach to elderly care

Article Abstract:

Nurses wishing to specialise in the care of elderly people in the UK will have to work in either the community or the private sector. There are a number of interesting initiatives in these sectors. A health visitor in a Hertfordshire GP practice invites people aged 65-75 to a series of health discussions. Health visitors in Dundee established a screening programme for the over-75s in their practice. A nursing home in Kent has opened a children's day nursery on its premises which benefits both the young and the elderly.

Pooling power

Article Abstract:

The UK government plans to facilitate closer liaison between the National Health Service and council services, such as social services, from April 2000. The plans will enable funds to be pooled and staff to be transferred between agencies. Unison is mainly in favour of the concept, with its only fears being about staff transfers.
