Front page splash: Max Clifford's decision to go public and campaign on behalf of the NHS involves a little more than simple philanthropy

Article Abstract:

Max Clifford has been supported and congratulated over his campaign to expose the destruction of the health service by the Conservative government. He believes that his experience of the NHS over the past 17 years, through his daughter Louise, who was diagnosed as having juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at the age of six, makes him qualified to undertake the campaign. He feels that ordinary people are getting a second class service, which is not the fault of doctors or nurses, and that it will cost a lot to bring the NHS back to health.

Acting up

Article Abstract:

Comedy has the same irreverence and lack of boundaries that is often seen in nursing, according to actress and comedian Helen Lederer. She was a counsellor and health worker before going into acting, and has played many nurses since her change of career. She has great respect for nurses, and does not feel that they should be forced to work under unbearable pressure without protesting. She is very critical of the way in which the National Health Service has been treated by politicians.

Research and development in nursing

Article Abstract:

Research and development (R&D) in the National Health Service has become an important part of the planning process. Steering groups have been set up using members of various medical and social professions and they have identified several areas suitable for research. The programme also tries to co-ordinate the R&D across the United Kingdom and it is important that the R&D programme encourages collaboration between the personnel who will become involved.
