Functional food fights

Article Abstract:

Issues discussed concern the US Food and Drug Administration's regulations for controversial 'functional foods,' or products that have been supplemented with additional vitamins, minerals or herbs. Topics addressed include the legal distinction between food and drugs, the regulatory powers of the FDA under the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, and the marketing of functional foods.

Safer drugs for children

Article Abstract:

As of April 1999, the FDA requires that drug manufacturers provide data and labeling on drugs frequently prescribed to children. The history of US government's attempts to regulate the pharmaceutical industry, and setting safety standards for drug testing on children are discussed.
