Gaia: from fanciful notion to research program

Article Abstract:

A scientific perspective for the Gaia hypothesis or the concept of biosphere self-regulatory mechanisms is offered. It should be considered as a process of natural selection and as an existing force. Advocates and critics of biosphere regulation are debating on climactic and environmental issues to press their contentions. Politicians may use the Gaia hypothesis to push for industrialization, despite evolving environmental effects. Although it offers a plausible explanation for climactic regulation, the Gaia hypothesis still warrants further study.

Mindfulness meditation-based stress reduction: experience with a bilingual inner-city program

Article Abstract:

A mindfulness meditation-based stress reduction program can improve the health and well-being of inner city residents. One urban community health center offered such a program in Spanish and English and reported a 60% completion rate for the eight-week course, as well as high client satisfaction. Analysis of patients' physical and psychological health measurements showed significant improvement. Mindfulness meditation involves daily practice in focusing on breathing, and can result in improved health beliefs and behaviors.

Developing and Implementing a Pharmaceutical Assistance Program for Low-Income Clients

Article Abstract:

Clinics can develop pharmaceutical assistance programs for patients not covered by Medicare, Medicaid, welfare or private insurance. After clients complete extensive financial histories, pharmaceutical companies can send clients vouchers to get medicines through local pharmacies. Health practitioners need to check the forms for completeness and encourage clients to notify the clinic when a month's supply of medicine is available.
