Genital fistulas caused by diverticular disease of the sigmoid colon

Article Abstract:

Doctors treating older women with symptoms of foul vaginal discharge and previous hysterectomies may consider a diagnosis of genital fistula resulting from diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon. Such a fistula is an abnormal opening from colon to vagina or bladder, allowing infection from the colon to pass into the other organ. Doctors report their experience in treating 13 women with genital fistulas resulting from sigmoid diverticulitis. Women were aged 54 to 89 years and their major symptom was a foul-smelling vaginal discharge. All women had previous hysterectomies. Genital fistulas were diagnosed by noninvasive vaginal retrograde dye studies. Barium enemas and colonoscopy were inadequate diagnostic tests. Fistulas were treated surgically in all cases. The incidence of colon-genital fistulas is increasing.

Repair of obstetric vesicovaginal fistulas in Africa

Article Abstract:

The outcomes of primary surgical repair in a program for obstetric vesicovaginal fistula repairs from obstetric trauma in Niger, Africa, are reported. The initial repair of vesicovaginal fistulas has the highest probability of success, in which the successful closure depends on size, site and associated scarring.
