Gently does it

Article Abstract:

Gentle teaching shows mentally handicapped people with challenging behaviour that they are deeply valued, participation is rewarding and that the teacher's presence is secure and safe. Gentle teaching constantly challenges practices and provides a focus for programmes. It concentrates on a posture of solidarity, rather than the overprotective, cold or authoritarian maladaptive postures usually experienced. Solidarity concentrates on relationship growth and mutual empowerment. Dialogue and interaction should be focused upon in order to stand by people when their challenging behaviour is most intense.

Treating obesity in people with learning disabilities

Article Abstract:

Obesity in people with learning disabilities is common and causes can be medical, a reliance on highly processed ready-made meals, low levels of physical activity and the use of food as an emotional tool. People with learning disabilties are under the same pressures to conform to a 'perfect' body shape as the rest of the population. They should be included in any decisions about their need to lose weight, with the help of a qualified dietitian, and should be encouraged to increase their physical activity and take responsibility for their diet.
