Going independent

Article Abstract:

Advice on establishing an independent midwifery service covers financial planning, insurance, service definition and advertising. Professional help may be advisable. Nursing organisations can advise on insurance and advertising. However, media coverage may be more influential than advertisements. Accurate record-keeping is essential to assist the health authority's supervisory function. Independent midwives should have thorough knowledge of midwifery rules and code of conduct. Membership of the Indpendent Midwives' Association is recommended.

Improving community services

Article Abstract:

Activity analysis has enabled Liverpool midwives to reorganise their workload and improve community care. In June 1989 about 27 midwives recorded all work-related activities. Analysis revealed administrative tasks and travelling accounted for 48% of time. Patient contact averaged 38%. Discussions identified necessary changes. Streamlining administration and reorganising group work has provided more time for patient contact. An evaluation in September 1990 established direct care time had increased to 57%.

Male delivery

Article Abstract:

Objections to male midwives are out-dated and inconsistent. Males participate in all other areas of maternity care. Sensitivity and understanding are more important than the sex of the midwife. It is unrealistic and unwise to try to keep midwifery a female preserve.
