Government moves closer to implementing self-referral law

Article Abstract:

The federal government has proposed a long-overdue rule covering the administration of the 'Stark II' law, which, under Medicare and Medicaid, limits physician referrals to bodies in which referring physicians or members of their immediate families have a financial interest. The law, named for Rep Pete Stark, added a host of 'designated health services' to referrals proscribed under the 'Stark I' law.

Computers' next frontier: clinical arena

Article Abstract:

Health care consultants project more physicians and health care firms will use computers in the doctor's office to cut costs, speed service and manage information. Internet technologies, intranets, electronic record keeping and other uses for computers in clinical settings are discussed along with a survey of 15,000 physicians about their plans to use computers.

Council urges crackdown on access to medical records

Article Abstract:

A report by the National Research Council advocates that access to electronic medical records should be restricted to a strictly on a need to know basis. Physicians and many other providers are enjoying unrestricted access to such records as health care providers strive to integrate their computer systems to optimize their information processing capabilities.
