Article Abstract:

The changes that nursing administrators have observed in the profession since the 1960s were relative minor compared to the enormous challenges they face in the 1990s. Previous alterations made improvements in patient care and improved the status of nurses, but the relative positions of health care providers in the total health care environment remained the same. The current revolution in health care offers nursing administrators the opportunity to complete reengineer the administration of nursing services.

Article Abstract:

The health care revolution has changed nursing and challenged the profession to provide improved care at lower costs. Nursing administrators must redesign nursing practice to allow holistic care that treats the whole person. The total work environment for nursing must be made more efficient. Nurses need commitment and creativity to meet the demands of delivering quality care to patients at competitive costs while protecting access to health care.

The challenge of making it real: interdisciplinary practice in a "seamless" organization

Article Abstract:

The University of Virginia Medical Center developed a 'seamless' organizational framework focused on improving the quality and speed of patient care while lowering costs. The structure utilizes highly developed interdisciplinary administrative and clinical strategies. Departments were abolished to eliminate management positions. Clinical care providers were deployed into 10 service centers in the Division of Patient Care Services.
