Guidelines for developing a nurse practitioner practice

Article Abstract:

The nurse practitioner (NP) guidelines at the National Cancer Institute-Medicine Branch (NCI-MB) provides a model for NP practice guidelines. Practice guidelines should include a job description, an NP/physician or collaborative practice agreement describing scope of practice, a list of required credentials, conditions for patient care and referral, and documentation of malpractice insurance. Within the NCI-MB guidelines, NPs provide primary care, admit and manage hospitalized patients, prescribe any drug, when certified, perform invasive procedures, and refer medically unstable patients.
