Guillain-Barre syndrome

Article Abstract:

Guillain-Barre syndrome affects around 1,500 people annually in the UK. The condition affects the peripheral nervous system. Experts believe it is an immune response in which lymphocytes attack the myelin sheaths around the peripheral nerves. The resulting damage impedes the transmission of nerve impulses. Symptoms can include weakness in the limbs, urine retention, respiratory problems and cardiac arrhythmias. Therapies include bed rest, plasmapheresis, intravenous immunoglobulin and physiotherapy. Around 80% of patients recover fully within a year. Death occurs in about 5% of cases.

Identifying the neds of relatives of forensic patients

Article Abstract:

A research project in a special hospital wasundertaken to identify the needs of those living with a relative who has schizophrenia. It foundthat relatives often lacked a basic understanding of the effects of schizophrenia and some believethat the illness was due to how the patient was brought up. Many relatives had difficulty inmaintaining effective relationships with patients due to their perceptions of theillness.
