HIV disease in the Czech Republic

Article Abstract:

The Czech Republic is slowly recognizing the severity of HIV infection as a public health problem. HIV-infected individuals are still a small fraction of the population, but there is widespread fear that HIV cases will escalate as political and social changes occur in the wake of the change in government. From the first reported AIDS case in 1985, HIV-infected individuals have increased to 239 by Aug. 1993. Educational intervention is being directed at homosexual men, who comprise more than 60% of HIV cases, but minimal educational efforts for heterosexuals have been made.

Increasing sexually transmitted disease rates among prostitutes in the Czech Republic

Article Abstract:

The Nov. 1989 revolution has spawned an increase in international travel, a sexual revolution, greater demand for sexual services and a rise in sexual activity, which, in turn, encouraged sexual promiscuity and prostitution. The rise in prostitution and promiscuous sexual behavior triggered the spread of sexually transmitted diseases in the country. Incidence of syphilis has grown by 330% in 1992, while incidence of gonorrhea has leaped to 13.9%, thus increasing the threat of AIDS.

Worsening prostitution and drug abuse problems may fuel the rise in HIV infection and AIDS in the Czech Republic. Though the prevalence of the HIV virus in the country does not yet constitute a serious epidemic, there has been a steady increase in the number of reported cases. As of Aug. 31, 1993, the cumulative incidence of HIV infection in the country is placed at 15.3 for every one million residents.
