House staff recruitment to municipal and voluntary New York City residency programs during the AIDS epidemic

Article Abstract:

Some medical school graduates may be reluctant to do their residency at hospitals that have a large percentage of AIDS patients. A survey of five New York City (NYC) public hospitals with a large number of AIDS patients found that the number of residents accepting positions fell 28.2% between 1983 and 1990. During the same time period, the number of residents accepting hospital positions in four cities with a low incidence of AIDS fell 9.2%. The number of residents accepting positions at private hospitals increased in all the cities, even hospitals that cared for a large number of AIDS patients. But in 1990, the number of residents accepting positions at private hospitals in NYC that care for a large number of AIDS patients dropped 30% in a single year. There may be other reasons why students avoid residencies at public hospitals in New York City, including publicized budget cuts, nursing shortages and a large number of patients whose diseases are a result of drug abuse.

The changing face of AIDS in Argentina

Article Abstract:

The demographics of AIDS is changing in Argentina. Argentina had 41 AIDS cases per million people in 1993, the second highest rate in South America. The number of AIDS cases in intravenous drug users increased 219% between 1991 and 1993, while the number of AIDS cases in heterosexuals increased 344%. In contrast, the number of cases in homosexuals increased 50% during that time period. The disease is spreading fastest in people 20 to 34 years old, indicating that many became infected during adolescence. Female partners of intravenous drug users are also at risk.
