Assessment of Infant Sleeping Position- Selected States, 1996

Article Abstract:

The Back to Sleep campaign appears to have reduced the rate of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The campaign encourages parent to place children on their backs when they sleep. A national parent survey found that placement of infants on their stomachs declined from 70% to 24% from 1992 to 1996, coincident with the health education campaign. Back-placement increased from 13% to 35%. Sleeping-position rates varied within ethnic groups and individual states, indicating cultural differences, educational differences, or other factors that may reduce the effectiveness of the Back to Sleep educational effort.

Trends in HIV-Related Sexual Risk Behaviors Among High School Students-Selected US Cities, 1991-1997

Article Abstract:

Data from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveys indicate that, from 1991 to 1997, sexual risk-taking declined among teenagers. The CDC analyzed survey data and determined that the number of teens with multiple sexual partners declined, sexual intercourse among teens declined, and condom use during intercourse increased. Despite these behavioral changes, HIV infection remains the seventh leading cause of death in people aged 15-24.
