Hard times in states afflict underfunded licensure boards

Article Abstract:

State medical boards are faced with hiring freezes, budget cutbacks and loss of licensing-fee income. Renewal fees were increased by 15 states in 1991. Many states diverted the additional revenue to the general fund to help balance the budget. Medical boards, without adequate funding for legal challenges, are now forced to rely on informal disciplinary actions. The Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States' board staffing and funding standards, due for release in Apr 1992, will enable state boards to justify additional funding.

Can renewed health corps keep 'em down on the farm?

Article Abstract:

Congress has increased funding for the National Health Service Corps, after spending cuts during the 1980s. However, only 20% of doctors who accepted medical college funds in exchange for rural service remain in their assigned communities. An AMA report recommends more attention to matching physicians' concerns when making placement assignments. For instance, some doctors' spouses also need to find employment. Many physicians refuse to pay fines levied against them because of failure to complete their service.

MD scalp hunting? Discipline report puts heat on state boards

Article Abstract:

The Federation of State Medical Boards' 1991 discipline statistics included state rates of disciplinary actions, as well as numbers of actions. Licensure officials are concerned that comparisons between states will lead to increased pressure to increase the rate of disciplinary actions. However, the comparisons could also lead to increased funding for state medical boards, as in Massachusetts.
