Have a strategic plan for managed care maneuvers

Article Abstract:

Physicians should develop managed care strategic plans to effectively adapt to changes in the health care delivery system. Market research related specifically to managed care is essential to capitalizing on potential opportunities. Physicians should carefully assess their utilization patterns, revenues by payer class and patient retention and attrition rates. Strategic plans should also include traditional strategic planning methods and considerations such as establishing goals and determining target markets.

Let's make a deal

Article Abstract:

Physicians should take several steps before they negotiate a contract with a managed care provider. For example, they should obtain a physician fee schedule and carefully analyze the terms of the contract. In addition, they should consider the market value of the procedures they offer and know their operating costs and the profitability of existing managed care contracts. They should also be aware that they do not have to participate in contracts that are unprofitable for them.

Resourceful negotiation: the answer is often in the question

Article Abstract:

Physicians can become better informed more quickly by asking resourceful, rather than perfunctory, questions. Questions that take into consideration future responsibilities or strategic actions can help physicians make faster decisions that address all aspects of the issue. Resourceful questions also help physicians clarify problematic areas, such as providing quality care under cost-cutting restraints.
