Health care reform necessary both here and abroad

Article Abstract:

Americans are demanding that their inequitable and unaffordable health care system be nationalized while the UK is moving toward privatization of its overburdened national scheme. The US should take the failed British system as a warning: demand for free health services will always outstrip supply. Change in social systems comes slowly. So much discretion is needed in reforming health care. The US must reform the cost of health care, not its quality, which is the world's best. Medical care should be made available and affordable for all, and all families must be protected from financial ruin.

Looking abroad for proposals on health care reform

Article Abstract:

The Australian health care system provides an ideal model for US health reform. Under the American version, physicians would be paid 85% of a fee schedule devised by an independent commission. Physicians could bill patients directly, and patients could be reimbursed at US Medical offices. Those physicians who 'bulk bill' could receive reimbursement at the same offices. Insurers would bid competitively to cover these offices and would be entitled to 3-5% of profits. A powerful inspector general's office would be set up to regulate the system.

True free enterprise best solution in health care reform

Article Abstract:

The problem with the health care system is too much government regulation, and the solution lies in reducing government regulation. If individuals could choose the quality of treatment based on their own judgment and ability to pay, then the free enterprise system could work to set fair and reasonable prices for medical services, as it does for all other services and commodities.
