Health workers to be treated privately as 'lifeline' closes

Article Abstract:

A special unit at the Royal Bethlem Hospital, Kent, for the treatment of health workers with serious mental health problems is to close at the end of Jan 1995. The unit has suffered from lack of funding, although its services were in great demand and health authorities and trusts across the UK had offered payment to have nurses and doctors treated there. Some nurses with mental health problems are now having to be referred for expensive private treatment.

Pertussis jab trials raise safety fears

Article Abstract:

Healthcare professionals hope that new vaccine combinations, which have been tested on children in North Hertfordshire and Gloucester, will enhance the possibility that the number of vaccinations which children require can be reduced. The trials will establish whether new forms of pertussis vaccine are suitable for UK vaccination schedules. Some experts believe that giving more vaccines at the same time will increase the danger of side-effects.

Agony and ecstasy: nurses need more education about substance misuse and harm reduction among young people who take illicit drugs such as ecstasy at raves

Article Abstract:

Nurses and health professionals are not sufficiently trained to cope with substance misuse, according to group of nurse leaders. The ENB's review of nurse training calls for more education for nurses about the subject along with a major change of attitude amongst health workers. An RCN adviser on substance misuse believes that ecstasy, which is a class A drug, should be placed in the B category, the same as cannabis.
