Stepney Nursing Development Unit (NDU), London, England has initiated 30 projects related to improving client choice in health care. Improved information srevices will facilitate access to primary health care. The NDU has developed resource packs on available services and support groups. Projects aim to simplify client records, coordinate community and hospital services, develop bilingual services and recruit employees from ethnic groups. Empowerment of women and children is also a priority.

Nurses should demand psychological support from their colleagues. A report has indicated 93% of nurses experienced work-related stress. Regular clinical supervision would allow objective assessment of traumatic situations, problems and coping procedures in a non-judgemental situation. Supervision is appropriate for all grades of staff. However, supervisors should be experienced clinical practitioners.
