Heart failure secondary to left ventricular systolic dysfunction: therapeutic advances and treatment recommendations

Article Abstract:

Patients who have heart failure (HF) after other major heart malfunctions may benefit from a variety of drug treatments. Heart failure occurs when the heart cannot effectively pump enough blood to maintain normal bodily functions. Drugs known to be effective in patients with HF include angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, vasodilators, digoxin, and diuretics. Exercise, a diet low in salt and alcohol, and comprehensive patient counseling also are recommended.

Using Beta-Blockers in the Treatment of Heart Failure

Article Abstract:

An overview is given of the use of beta-blockers in the treatment of heart failure, which appears to have long-term beneficial effects although symptoms may worsen initially. Topics covered include the physiologic rationale, mechanisms related to beneficial effects, review of research, clinical application, selection of beta blocking drugs, long-term follow-up, and practice recommendations.

Melatonin: media hype or therapeutic breakthrough?

Article Abstract:

Melatonin is a pineal hormone that has chronobiotic and hypnotic effects, and appears to be useful in the treatment of jet lag and insomnia. Children with neurologic impairment that affects sleep-wake rhythms may also benefit from melatonin treatment. Research on the effect of melatonin treatment for cancer, aging, cardiovascular disease, and other disorders is still preliminary.
