Heat-Related Mortality-United States, 1997
Article Abstract:
Four cases illustrate the dangers of excessive hot weather. Between 1979 and 1995, 6,615 deaths in the US were caused by excessive heat exposure and 42% were due to hot weather. Many deaths occur in people 55 years old or older. Hot weather can also increase the death rate from other causes, such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Risk factors for heat-related death include alcohol consumption, overweight, certain medications, exertion in hot environments, age, chronic conditions, living alone, and physical or mental impairment.

Heat-wave-related mortality - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, July 1995
Article Abstract:
Of the 197 people in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who died between July 13-23, 1995, almost half (91) died from heatstroke. Like many areas of the East and Midwest, Wisconsin experienced a major heat wave between July 12-15. Over 80% of the deaths from heatstroke in Milwaukee occurred between July 14-17 and 42% occurred on July 15. Those at high risk for heatstroke should avoid mid-day activities, drink plenty of non-alcoholic beverages and spend as much time as possible in an air-conditioned building.
