A 23-year-old man with a mediastinal embryonic carcinoma and hematologic abnormalities

Article Abstract:

A 23-year-old man was admitted to a hospital because a chest X-ray had found a mass in his mediastinum, which is the area between the upper portion of the lungs. Biopsy of the mass revealed it to be a germ cell tumor. He was given chemotherapy, discharged, and admitted several times for further chemotherapy. He was found to have anemia and low blood platelet counts which were not thought to be due to the chemotherapy. A bone marrow biopsy revealed acute myeloid leukemia, from which he died six months later.

Article Abstract:

The treatment carried in case of 30-year old women suffering from mediastinal mass, which is caused by fine, compartmentalizing sclerosis, is discussed. The presence of cavitation within the lesion of patient concluded a case of tuberculosis, but lack of evidence favored a diagnosis of lymphoma.
