Grime watch

Article Abstract:

Hygiene standards in UK hospitals have declined in recent years due to factors including cost controls and increasing numbers of antibiotic-resistant organisms. However, an initiative by the Infection Control Nurses' Association (ICNA) aims to address this problem. ICNA intends to produce an audit tool for hygiene assessment and to develop recommendations for good practice in hygiene. It has launched the project by surveying hygiene practices in a range of health care institutions. The results of this survey are presented.

Why action is needed to stop spread of hepatitis C

Article Abstract:

The severe threat of chronic liver disease developing after exposure to the hepatitis C virus means nurses should identify those most at risk and offer counselling. Up to 80% of infected patients will develop chronic liver inflammation, although many people are unaware that they have the disease. Hepatitis C was discovered in 1989 and is transmitted by sexual contact, sharing drug equipment or blood transfusions. Hepatitis C affects up to 70% of drug users in the UK in 1999.
