High blood pressure: some answers, new questions, continuing challenges

Article Abstract:

The state of hypertension research is summarized in the May 22 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Almost 50 million Americans have high blood pressure, which is a risk factor for heart disease, strokes and kidney disease. Much of this information came from the Framingham Study, which also showed that systolic blood pressure is the most important component in the increased risk of heart disease. High dietary levels of calories, alcohol and salt can contribute to high blood pressure and physical inactivity and low potassium levels may also be involved. One group of researchers is investigating the possible role of lead exposure.

Blood conservation

Article Abstract:

Blood conservation is an option for many patients who may need a blood transfusion in the future. Surgery patients in particular can use this option. Preoperative autologous donation means that the patient donates blood before the operation and then receives his or her own donated blood after surgery. The use of autologous blood donations increased substantially when HIV was found to be transmitted via blood. Blood substitutes are under development, but might be limited to certain patients.
