Histiocytoid (oncocytic) cardiomyopathy

Article Abstract:

Histiocytoid cardiomyopathy was diagnosed as the cause of sudden death in a 20-month-old boy. Autopsy results revealed structural abnormalities and a pale color of the heart muscle. Using microscopic analysis, researchers observed alterations in the heart cells and chronic inflammatory cells interspersed among the abnormal cells. Heart beat irregularities or sudden death occur frequently in children under 2 years old who have this condition. However, this heart disease is very rare in children and affects mostly girls. It remains unclear how and why the heart cells become abnormal but virulent factors may be involved.

The country is beginning to train dentists, but only 70 graduates have emerged since 1994 from the nation's only dental school. There are many local practitioners who have received some form of dental training from relatives. Most Cambodians cannot afford expert care. Arsenic is used to control nerve pain, and anesthesia is used only in emergencies. Faith healers remain popular with their provision bursts of magic air into mouths to relieve pain.
