Can you hear me?

Article Abstract:

A nurse tells of his experience in attempting to communicate with a quadriplegic patient who had been thought unable to respond. He feels a 'presence' surrounds the patient, whose family had decided to allow him to die peacefully. The nurse finds that the patient is able to communicate by blinking his eyes, the first time he had shown any response since his accident six years previously.

Learning to fail

Article Abstract:

A nurse recounts her experience of nursing an elderly patient who refuses to take any interest in the outside world, despite her attempts to change his quality of life. She realises that the experience has given her an insight into caring that changes her life and acknowledges that a patient's right to choose and refuse is fundamental to caring.
