Hospitals respond by expanding outside care

Article Abstract:

Many hospitals are developing home health and ambulatory care centers in response to increased competition from non-hospital organizations. Hospital-owned home-based agencies and proprietary facilities have grown 46% since 1988, according to the National Assn for Home Care. The role of hospitals in outpatient care is also increasing due to the efforts of managed care insurers, who are establishing integrated care networks. Hospital-affiliated units have an advantage in the outpatient market because they are able to offer more comprehensive services.

Vermont leaning toward single-payer; budget target set

Article Abstract:

Vermont policymakers are about to implement a health care reform plan. They will choose between a single-payer model or a mandated employer contribution system. The single-payer plan calls for a flat 12% payroll tax, while companies would pay a set amount per worker under the employer-supported model. Both systems would rely on regulated rates, centralized authority and managed care. The state medical society is currently lobbying to become a collective bargaining unit for physicians.
