How do physicians treat HIV?

Article Abstract:

The Center for Disease Control, in partnership with the American Medical Association, is conducting a survey on how physicians act to prevent and treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections. The Physicians Assn for AIDS Care is conducting a similar survey pertaining to doctors' methods of treating opportunistic AIDS-related infections. The surveys results will be used for educating physicians on AIDS prevention and treatment, and to help establish national standards for the treatment of AIDS and AIDS-related infections.

No grades for doctors on nutrition

Article Abstract:

The Institute for Science in Society reports that nutrition guidance by physicians is incomplete. Measured by the standard of the Surgeon General's Report on Nutrition and Health, limiting fat in the diet seems to be the target for healthful eating. Medical schools do not offer much education in nutrition, according to the report, and the National School Lunch program does not provide good nutritional guidelines. The report gives the food industry high marks for marketing products with reduced fat content.

A meeting of alternative, allopathic minds?

Article Abstract:

Alternative medicine, or complementary medicine as it is known in Europe, is receiving increasing attention. For instance, the Food and Drug Administration approved the drug Taxol, a yew tree bark derivative, as a treatment for ovarian cancer in 1992. The gulf between traditional medicine and alternative care is narrowing as treatments from different traditions are combined as part of a single regimen. However, alternative medicine practitioners still face social stigma from other physicians.
