How should nurses respond to patients's sexual needs?

Article Abstract:

A nurse faced with a patient who requested sexual favours offered the patient details of some escort agencies in order to help deal with his sexual needs. It is argued that it would be more appropriate to explain to the patient that his behaviour is offensive and offer to arrange counselling on sexual matters. Nurses are advised to discuss difficult issues with their line managers.

Meeting the challenges

Article Abstract:

Nurses acting as patient advocates have a problem in that they lack the autonomy to take moral decisions, and that supporting the patient can ultimately lead to conflict with hospital bureaucracy and doctors. The necessity of autonomy to enable nurses to take on the role of patient advocates is argued.
