How to manage depression in the workplace

Article Abstract:

Occupational depression should be addressed because it can affect employee performance and safety but can be cured. Among the most commonly reported symptoms of depression include exhaustion, difficulty in concentrating, a sense of withdrawal from colleagues and irritability with fellow workers. Supervisors can help solve employee depression because they are in the best position to observe manifestations of this mental health problem. They should watch out for distinct signs, monitor work performance, provide positive interaction and even intervene to combat depression.

Forty years on the safety front

Article Abstract:

Former British Safety Council Dir. Gen. James Tye said that bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad-cow disease, is the most important safety and health issue affecting the UK. Tye added that safety legislation in the country has been trimmed down as the government increasingly let industry set its own codes of conduct regarding safety in the workplace. However, he stated that existing safety regulations, although stringent enough, could still stand some improvement.

ANSI's office ergonomics standard is here: now what?

Article Abstract:

The American National Standards Institute has announced that it has developed a voluntary standards program for visual display terminal workstations. Industry groups are worried, however, that the standards initiative, named ANSI/HFES 100, may soon be outmoded as developments are very rapid. Issues about the standard include concerns on shift work, increasing number of office products, changing workers and new office or remote office working arrangements.
