Hypercalcemia due to endogenous overproduction of active vitamin D in identical twins with cat-scratch disease

Article Abstract:

Cat-scratch disease (CSD) should be added to the list of diseases that cause elevated blood levels of vitamin D that are not subject to the usual regulatory process. This in turn can cause elevated calcium levels in blood and urine. Two twins were admitted to a hospital with cat-scratch disease and in both boys, blood and urinary calcium levels and blood vitamin D levels were elevated. These levels returned to normal 16 to 20 days after admission even though the boys were not given antibiotics.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease associated with cadaveric dura mater grafts - Japan, January 1979-May 1996

Article Abstract:

Dura mater collected from cadavers may have caused the degenerative brain condition Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in 43 patients in Japan. Dura mater is a nervous system membrane that can be used as graft material in neurologic and orthopedic surgery. Virtually every case of CJD was linked to dura sold under the brand name LYODURA, manufactured by B. Braun Melsungen AG. In 1987, the company revised its production process to reduce the risk of CJD transmission.

Statin-associated myopathy

Article Abstract:

Between 1% and 5% of all patients who take a statin drug will experience muscle pain and weakness, according to researchers who reviewed all articles about muscle problems caused by this group of drugs. A serious muscle disease called rhabdomyolysis is not that common among statin users, occurring in only 3,339 people between 1990 and 2002. Statins are cholesterol-lowering drugs that are very widely used.
