Hypertension: catch them when they're older

Article Abstract:

The more extensive use of antihypertensive therapies would allow more older people to lead a healthy and active life. There have been initiatives in the UK to improve detection and treatment of hypertension, but half the population with hypertension are still undetected and unaware that they have it. Furthermore, half of those detected are not treated, while half of those treated have uncontrolled hypertension. There is strong evidence that treating hypertension in older people is effective, with diuretics and beta blockers being the treatments of first choice.

Preventing the uptake of smoking in young people

Article Abstract:

The UK government has highlighted the importance of reducing smoking among young people. Any initiative designed to reduce the impact of smoking in young people must tackle the factors linked with the uptake of smoking, including peer and parental smoking, age and ethnicity. It is clear that multifaceted approaches are needed, involving health services, education and other community-based groups. A series of one-off interventions may be less successful than a coordinated, long term strategy.
