Hyperthermia and dehydration-related deaths associated with intentional rapid weight loss in three collegiate wrestlers - North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Michigan, November-December 1997
Article Abstract:
Wrestlers and their coaches need to ensure that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) guidelines against rapid weight loss before a competition are strictly followed. The NCAA added a penalty for non-compliance following the deaths of three wrestlers who used techniques for rapid weight loss that may have led to dehydration and hyperthermia. All three tried to lose 4 to 15 pounds within a few hours. They exercised heavily, used sweat-impermeable suits and restricted fluid intake. All three went into cardiac arrest and could not be resuscitated.

Impact of annual targeted treatment on infectious trachoma and susceptibility to reinfection
Article Abstract:
The impact of two annual targeted azithromycin treatments on active trachoma and Chlamydia trachomatis infection rates over three years in Vietnam is evaluated. The increasing infection rates have suggested that treatment might interrupt the duration of infection required for developing immunity, increasing the number of individuals susceptible to reinfection and adversely affecting disease prevalence over time.

Malignant hyperthermia: Update on susceptibility testing
Article Abstract:
Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a pharmacogenetic clinical syndrome that manifests as a hypermetabolic crisis when a susceptible individual is exposed to an anesthetic triggering agent. Clinical signs include unexplained elevation of end-tidal carbon dioxide, muscle rigidity, acidosis, tachycardia, tachypnea, hyperthermia, and evidence of rhabdomyolysis.
