True international collaboration: now or never

Article Abstract:

Biologists devoted to conservation need to set up international relationships and must find ways to help developing countries with limited assets in protecting rare and endangered species. Conservation biology is well established. It is recognized worldwide as a central discipline for sustainable development and biodiversity protection. Many developing countries, however, have major deficiencies in the ways in which they approach loss of biodiversity, and it is in those countries where the greatest biological diversity exists. They lack trained conservation biologists and have limitations in fields of expertise and lack influence in decision-making. Mexico is a megadiversity country which makes a good example, being one of the megadiversity countries, about 5.5% of the country now in biosphere reserves. In reality the reserves are economic sinks for a very poor country. Conservation should pay for itself to some degree at least. There are examples in MExico of joint operations involving international funds, but there are far too few of them.

Hyperthermia

Article Abstract:

Hyperthermia is an abnormally high body temperature that is caused by abnormalities in regulation of body temperature. Normal body temperature varies between 36 and 37.5 deg C. It is controlled by the preoptic nucleus in the hypothalamus of the brain. This part of the brain maintains a balance between heat production and heat loss. Increased body temperature occurs when this balance is upset. There are several types of hyperthermic disorders. These include exertional hyperthermia, heat stroke, malignant hyperthermia of anesthesia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome and hormonal hyperthermia. Therapeutic hyperthermia involves elevation of body temperature to treat different diseases. It has been used to treat musculoskeletal disorders and cancer. Hyperthermic disorders may cause brain damage and different types of metabolic disorders. Efforts should be made to diagnose the underlying disease in patients with hyperthermia.
