Hypromellos

Article Abstract:

Hypromellose lubricates the surface of the eye in the same way as natural tears, and it can be used to relieve the dryness and pain associated with reduced or abnormal tear production, by being instilled frequently, even hourly, for adequate relief. When first instilled, hypermellose may cause blurred vision, and contact lens users need to take extra care as some of these contain drugs and preservatives that can accumulate in hydrogel lenses, causing toxic reactions.

Meningitis: a village holds its breath

Article Abstract:

Since 1997, the mining village of Ironville, Derbyshire, has had nine meningitis outbreaks. Two children have died. Recently, 300 children ages 1 through 11 were vaccinated with the new Conjugate C meningococcal vaccine. Tests show the village has a normal carrier rate for the disease, but the incidence of meningitis is 100 times higher than the national average. The latest outbreak and the effort to vaccinate the community are discussed.
