Immature lecithin/sphingomyelin ratios and neonatal respiratory course

Article Abstract:

Measurement of amniotic lecithin/sphingomyelin ratios may help determine the need for respiratory support in premature infants. Lecithin and sphingomyelin are phospholipids present in amniotic fluid that may predict lung maturity in premature infants. A study examined the need for respiratory support among 104 infants whose amniotic lecithin/sphingomyelin ratios were measured within 72 hours of birth. An immature lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio correctly predicted a need for any type of respiratory support in 44% of the infants. Amniotic lecithin/sphingomyelin ratios were also predictive of the total number of days of respiratory support and the total number of days in the hospital. Lecithin/sphingomyelin ratios were measured in mother-baby pairs with complications such as premature rupture of fetal membranes, preterm labor, chronic hypertension and fetal growth retardation.

Surgical resection alone is effective treatment for ovarian immature teratoma in children and adolescents: a report of the Pediatric Oncology Group and the Children's Cancer Group

Article Abstract:

Chemotherapy is probably not necessary in the treatment of ovarian immature teratoma in children. In a study of 31 children with this tumor who were surgically treated, four-year survival rates were 98% or greater depending on the nature of the tumor. Chemotherapy should be reserved for those who relapse.

Comparison of the TDx-FLM II and lecithin to sphingomyelin ratio assays in predicting fetal lung maturity

Article Abstract:

The usefulness of the TDx-FLM II and lecithin to sphingomyelin (L/S) ratio assays in predicting fetal lung maturity is evaluated. The results provide new insight into the optimal use, in sequential or reflex cascade testing, of the TDx-FLM II and L/S ratio.
