Immediate versus delayed treatment for HIV infection

Article Abstract:

HIV patients whose T cell counts have fallen to between 200 and 350 have a better prognosis if they begin taking AIDS drugs right away. However, the benefits of immediate treatment are less clear in patients whose T cell counts are 350 or higher. This is important, because some doctors believe delaying treatment will spare the patient from side effects and may also reduce the risk of viral drug resistance.

Stopping treatment with antibiotics that prevent Mycobacterium avium complex infection in persons with HIV infection who have responded well to anti-HIV drugs

Article Abstract:

Many HIV patients whose CD4+ T cell counts rise above 100 can stop taking drugs to prevent Mycobacterium avium complex infection. This was the conclusion of a study of 643 HIV patients with T cell counts below 50 whose counts rose above 100 after they began taking anti-HIV drugs.
