Immune globulin to prevent nosocomial infections

Article Abstract:

Treatment with immune globulin may reduce the risk of a nosocomial, or hospital acquired, infection in hospital patients. Premature infants have lower levels of antibodies because they are born before enough maternal antibodies had been transferred through the placenta. A research study found that premature infants treated with intravenous immune globulin may have fewer first infections than those who were not. Among those who developed infections, those treated with immune globulin spent less time in the hospital than those who were not treated. Another research study found that fewer intensive care unit (ICU) patients treated with intravenous immune globulin after surgery developed pneumonia, compared with those treated with hyperimmune globulin or a placebo. More research needs to be done before immune globulin is given routinely to premature infants or ICU patients after surgery.

Cicatricial pemphigoid

Article Abstract:

The case studies of a 26-year-old man suffering from blisters in his tongue and a 70-year-old man suffering from cicatricial pemphigoid in his right eye are presdented. The findings of both cases indicate a deposition of the IgG and IgA antibodies in the basement-membrane-zone.
