Impact of tuberculosis on the body composition of HIV0infected men in Brazil

Article Abstract:

Men who are both HIV positive and tubercular are in a significantly worse state of nutritional deficiency then men who are merely HIV positive. The degree of malnutrition is so extreme, it is neccessary to measure according to body cell mass (BCM) is necessary to use to appreciate it, lean body mass and fat mass not showing the extent of the situation. In examining 11 men who were HIVTB+ and 12 men HIVTB- all of whom were in a charitable home for poor, homeless, HIV+ people in Rio De Janeiro, (and therefore having the same amount of nutrition and care available to them) those differences were noted.

Feeding a habit

Article Abstract:

Drug users usually have very poor diets which in turn can lead to more serious illness. Diets usually consist of refined carbohydrates, such as cakes and sweet drinks, while intake of essential fibre and vitamins is low. Eating is irregular and usually takes place late in the day after their first drug hit. Incomes are low and healthy eating is not seen as a priority. Nutritional education is a major part of helping drug users to improve their health.
