Implantable left ventricular assist devices

Article Abstract:

Ventricular assist devices may benefit many patients with congestive heart failure who are waiting for a donor heart. These devices consist of an artificial pump implanted in the chest and attached to the heart and an external battery pack worn over the shoulder. Two such devices are ThermoCardiosystems Heartmate 1205 VE device and the Novacor N100 system. Both devices have been approved by the FDA. These devices allow 74% of patients to survive until they can undergo heart transplantation.

Capturing the unexpected benefits of medical research

Article Abstract:

Several mechanisms could be used to ensure that useful ideas discovered during the course of medical research could be quickly introduced into patient care. One is to encourage communication among various researchers as well as between researchers and practicing physicians. Once a treatment is introduced, clinical experience is needed to determine how effective it is. Some medical research can be publicly supported while other research is best supported by the private sector.

Long-term use of a left ventricular assist device for end-stage heart failure

Article Abstract:

Left ventricular assist devices can improve the quality of life of patients with heart failure who are not eligible for a heart transplant, according to a study of 129 patients. These devices help the heart pump blood and are usually used in patients who are waiting for a heart transplant.
