Improper conduct

Article Abstract:

Guidelines on sexual harassment of nurses have encouraged the confrontation of a long-standing problem. Trade Union research has indicated about 50% of women may experience sexual harassment at work. Student nurses are particularly vulnerable to abuse of authority. Royal College of Nursing guidelines define harassment as unwelcome sexual behaviour that causes offence. They encourage staff members to monitor their own behaviour to avoid misunderstandings. However, some feel useful non-sexual physical contact will also be discriminated against.

A belated diagnosis

Article Abstract:

Rett syndrome is a condition which affects one in 12,000 to 15,000 girls, and is believed to be a genetic disorder whereby a gene on the X chromosome is affected by a mutation. Girls with the condition develop normally until between nine to 18 months, when they lose some use of hand movement and develop repetitive hand movements. Around 50% of Rett sufferers develop epilepsy and other disabilities include deformed joints, scoliosis and muscle wasting. Early physiotherapy can prevent the physical deformities.
