In fit company

Article Abstract:

There is now growing demand for a wide range of occupational health care services in the UK. More attention is being given to the many different aspects of corporate fitness as it becomes increasingly clear that occupational ill health places a great financial burden on the economy. Within corporate fitness, the key issues are related to the lifestyles of individual employees, including the amount of exercise they take, how much tobacco and alcohol they consume and what they eat. Many employers are now keen to reduce sickness absence caused by lifestyle issues.

Launchpad to health

Article Abstract:

Matra Marconi Space, which mainly designs, produces, tests and launches communication satellites, employs two occupational health nurses. The nurses see the company as a community, and are therefore able to encourage the development of a healthy and safe environment. The company also employs a local GP as a company doctor for one afternoon a fortnight, and has 57 employees trained to administer first aid when required. The nurses see themselves as having a preventive role, and are keen to establish positive links with employees.

GPs ignorant of work related illness

Article Abstract:

A survey of general practitioners' awareness of health and safety legislation undertaken by the Health and Safety Executive, found that only a third correctly defined a prescribed disease, and only a quarter knew the definition of reportable diseases and injuries. Doctor's training in recognising work as a cause of illness should be increased.
