In from the cold

Article Abstract:

Representatives at the 1997 International Council of Nurses will include an increasing number from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union countries. Professionalism in nursing was not encouraged under the Soviet model, and nurses from these countries are enjoying a new sense of professional fellowship, and support in their desire for a more caring approach in medicine. Some countries have revived old national nursing associations or launched new ones, and the World Health Organization is helping with the development and implementation of national action programmes for nursing.

Gro Harlem Brundtland could be the person to restore stability and credibility to the World Health Organization

Article Abstract:

Gro Harlem Brundtland, who is set to become the new director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), will face considerable challenges. She will have to reintroduce a strong sense of unity within the organization, which has become increasingly divided, and will have to act as the driving force behind a process for establishing a new vision of world health. Above all, she must overcome the poor management which has emerged in the WHO as a result of its domination by male doctors.
