Inactivation of the DNA-repair gene MGMT and the clinical response of gliomas to alkylating agents

Article Abstract:

Patients with a brain tumor called a glioma may benefit from chemotherapy with alkylating agents if the MGMT DNA repair gene is inactivated. This can often happen spontaneously when the gene is methylated. In a study of 47 patients, 40% had a methylated gene and these patients had longer survival rates.

Gene silencing in cancer in association with promoter hypermethylation

Article Abstract:

Promoter hypermethylation and the role it plays in cancer is reviewed. Promoter hypermethylation occurs when methyl groups are attached to the promoter region of a gene. This affects gene expression and can turn the gene off altogether.

DNA methylation markers and early recurrence in stage I lung cancer

Article Abstract:

A case-control study on patients with non-small-cell lung cancer to investigate the association between clinical outcome and the DNA methylation status of the tumor was conducted. Despite surgery with curative intent, the spreading of tumor cells outside the area of curative resection is the leading cause of relapse.
