Incidence and determinants of hepatitis C virus infection among individuals at risk of sexually transmitted diseases attending a human immunodeficiency virus type 1 testing program

Article Abstract:

Both injection drug use (IDU), HIV status, and sexual behavior patterns appear to be significant risk factors in the transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. Follow-up HCV tests were performed on 244 homosexuals, 12 IDUs, and 453 at-risk heterosexuals who were initially HCV-negative. Proportionally more IDUs later tested positive for HCV than the other groups. Among non-IDUs, more HIV-positive participants later tested positive for HCV than HIV-negative participants, particularly those with severely compromised immune systems.
