Influence of patient literacy on the effectiveness of a primary care-based diabetes disease management program

Article Abstract:

The role of literacy in the effectiveness of a comprehensive disease management program for patients with diabetes is examined. A diabetes disease management program that addresses literacy is proposed to be beneficial for patients with low literacy, and increasing access to such a program could help reduce health disparities.

The challenges of changing pediatric practice to provide parents and children with services that will optimize child development are reviewed. One such program called Healthy Steps for Young Children was evaluated in a study published in 2003. Many states are adopting and evaluating their own programs.
